Instrument Calibration: How Often Should You Do It

Calibration is critical in the manufacturing industry to maintain the equipment’s performance and accuracy. It is also important for quality assurance. Engineers must design the product based on exact and right measurements — this is where calibration proves to be helpful.

Relevance of Calibration in Manufacturing

The process of calibration consists of finding a relationship between two readings — one of a standard and one of the instrument whose measurement is being taken. The idea is to ensure that the instrument reading matches or lies within the tolerance range of the standard measurement. You can say that calibration is a process of comparison.

The importance and relevance of calibration cannot be undermined in the manufacturing industry. If any equipment or instrument exhibits incorrect measurements, the final product will be faulty and of low quality. If an instrument receives an electric shock or vibration, it can start exhibiting incorrect values. It may also occur if the instrument has been exposed to hostile conditions. Sudden changes in the weather also affect instrument calibration.

Quality Engineers can determine the quality of measurement with the help of calibration. Quality affects the customer usage — a good quality product will find a wide customer base while poor quality products will lead to dissatisfied customers who would eventually stop using the product. Calibration helps the manufacturer produce high quality products. If an instrument doesn’t exhibit consistency with other measurements, then the final product will not work. This will lead to a drop in its sales and eventually affect the profitability of the manufacturer.

Important Calibration Parameters
Let's look at some parameters and commonly used terminologies in calibration.

Tolerance: This important terminology refers to the permissible deviation from a specified value. Each and every piece of industrial equipment has a calibration tolerance indicated with it. If the output value exceeds the specified tolerance value, then you have to adjust the asset in a way that it produces the permissible measurement values. Usually, the denomination is stated by the manufacturer on a data sheet, which contains up to four tolerance levels. Tolerance 1 is the narrowest and tolerance 4 is the broadest.

Accuracy Ratio: This expresses the relationship between the accuracy of the test standard and accuracy of the instrument under test. Most manufacturers recommend having an accuracy ratio of 4:1 for any asset.

Traceability: Ensure that you do all the calibrations in accordance with an internationally recognized standard. The measurements will be more useful to you when they relate to similar measurements, which can be made at different locations or time. This factor helps in keeping the process of manufacturing in control.

Use of Calibration Labs and Certificates
If you want to correlate your measurements with SI units, you may send the equipment readings to a calibration laboratory as it provides you with calibration standards. A calibration lab covers different types of calibration such as volumetric, weight, temperature, etc. Moreover, you can also avail verification and calibration services for laboratory equipment.

Calibration labs ensure that strict environmental conditions are maintained within the facility. They can track even the slightest deviation from the acceptable measurements, thus ensuring that the performance isn’t affected.

All the results are presented as a calibration certificate, which contains the following information:

  • Owner’s identity
  • Credibility and authorization of the lab
  • Measurements made using the instrument and likewise.
